Other Things to Do

On this page I list some of the other great things to do in Evanston. This page is still a work in progress.

Bookman's Alley

Type: used bookstore

Location: 1712 Sherman Ave.

Bookman's AlleyThis place is in an actual alley behind Seville Flowers (just off of Sherman Avenue, north of Church). If you enjoy used bookstores or history, check out Bookman's Alley. It is a fascinating storehouse of old relics, artwork, and books. If you like old books, you will probably be here a while.

Evanston Farmer's Market

Farmer's Market

Type: Open market where Midwest farmers sell produce and flowers

Location: The surface parking lot across from 1033 University Place.

The location is directly behind the Hilton Garden Inn. The market is held on Saturday mornings from about 7:30 AM until noon. They sell fresh fruits, produce and flowers. It is simply a fun place to walk though. The flowers are inexpensive, so if you are bringing a date to the game, you can make a good impression without spending too much. It shuts down in early November.

Dave's Down-to-Earth Rock Shop

Type: gem & mineral shop

Location: 704 Main Street, south of downtown Evanston

Dave's Rock Shop features the most diverse collection of minerals and semiprecious stones in the area, with some amazing specimens such as an amethyst geode the size of a small bathtub. There is beautiful jewelry made from exotic minerals such as watermelon tourmaline, Mexican crazy lace agate, and fossil ammonite shells. Dave's also has a stunning collection of Native American jewelry and Kachina dolls, and a wide variety of beads and other jewelry-making supplies. Don't miss the picture jasper pendants, which look like miniature desert landscapes. Dave's also features the Northern suburbs' only natural history museum, located in the basement of their store. Museum highlights include a 20,000-year-old cave bear skeleton and the world's largest carnivorous dinosaur egg.

Mitchell Museum of the American Indian

Type: Museum of Native American artifacts

Location: 3001 Central Street

The Mitchell Museum is the only museum in the Chicago area devoted entirely to Native American history, art, and culture. It is on west Central street, near Hartigan's and the Old Neighborhood Grill. Exhibits include pottery, jewelry, beadwork, Kachina dolls, and birchbark canoes. The second floor is an art gallery of works by Native American artists. Artisan-crafted jewelry, pottery, and other items are for sale in the gift shop. Stop by for the museum's Native American Jewelry Trading Days, where jewelry from many tribes and artisans is for sale.

Grosse Point Lighthouse

Type: Lighthouse

Location: 2601 Sheridan Road

This historic lighthouse was built in 1873. It is the only lighthouse on the Great Lakes to be designated a National Historic Landmark. It is 113 feet tall and is still operational, shining an electric beam to guide small boats sailing by. The lighthouse is located several blocks north of the main Northwestern campus.

Baha'i Temple

Baha'i Temple

The Baha'i Temple is a circular, nine-sided temple surrounded by formal gardens and fountains. It is one of only seven temples in the world built to be places of worship for the Baha'i faith.
